Palaces, rock carvings, and a quiet, layered history.
From the royal capital of Agartala to the ancient carvings of Unakoti and the orange orchards of Jampui Hills, Tripura rewards the curious traveller.

"The grand Ujjayanta Palace in Agartala, lit warmly at dusk, reflected in its pools."
Tripura is small, gentle, and surprisingly deep. Royal palaces, mysterious ancient rock carvings, hill orchards, and a layered history that you can walk through in just a few unhurried days. Tripura is one of the smallest Northeastern states and one of the easiest to underestimate. That would be a mistake. It was a princely kingdom for centuries, and that royal legacy lives on in the grand Ujjayanta Palace and the water palace of Neermahal. Layered on top is a much older history, carved into the hillsides at Unakoti, where colossal rock sculptures have watched over the forest for over a thousand years. It is a state for travellers who like history they can reach out and touch, delivered at a relaxed pace. The temples, the palaces, the carvings, and the gentle Jampui Hills can be woven into a satisfying few days, and it pairs beautifully with neighbouring Mizoram or a wider regional loop.

"The white facade and domes of Ujjayanta Palace against a clear sky."
Agartala
The capital and the seat of the old kingdom. The magnificent Ujjayanta Palace dominates the city, alongside the Jagannath temple, the heritage park, and the state museum. A walkable, welcoming introduction to Tripura.

"The colossal ancient rock-cut Shiva carvings of Unakoti emerging from a green hillside."
Unakoti
The state's most extraordinary site. A hillside covered in enormous rock-cut sculptures and carvings of Shiva, ancient, weathered, and wrapped in legend. Often called the lost hill of faces, it is unlike anything else in the region.
Melaghar and Udaipur
Melaghar is home to Neermahal, a beautiful water palace set in the middle of Rudrasagar Lake. Nearby Udaipur holds the revered Tripura Sundari temple, one of the most important shakti shrines in the country.
Jampui Hills and beyond
The state's hill country, famous for its orange orchards, sunrise viewpoints, and tribal villages. Add the rock carvings at Chabimura and the Sepahijala wildlife sanctuary, and the quieter corners of Tripura come into their own.
